Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we're asked most often. Can't find what you're after? Get in touch and we'll help you out.
Do I need a referral to book a session?
No, you're welcome to book with us directly, no referral needed. If you'd like to claim a Medicare rebate, you'll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP first. See Fees & Medicare for how that works.
What happens in the first session?
There's no need to have the right words or know exactly what's going on before you walk in. The first session is mostly about getting to know each other: what's brought you in, what you're hoping for, and whether we feel like a good fit to work together. There's no pressure to have it all figured out.
How many sessions will I need?
It really depends on what you're bringing to therapy. Some people find a handful of sessions enough to work through something specific, while others prefer ongoing, longer-term support. We'll check in on how things are going as we go, and you're always welcome to ask.
Can I do telehealth instead of coming in person?
Yes. If getting into Leichhardt isn't an option, we can meet over secure video instead, wherever you happen to be. Telehealth suits ongoing clients as well as those further from Sydney's Inner West, and carries the same rebate eligibility as in-person sessions in most cases.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Life happens, and we understand that sometimes you need to cancel or reschedule! We ask for at least 48 hours' notice: cancellations or reschedules with less than 48 hours' notice incur a fee of 50% of the session fee, and cancellations, reschedules or no-shows with less than 24 hours' notice incur the full session fee. Cancellation fees aren't eligible for a Medicare, NDIS or private health rebate. If you can't make it in person, a telehealth session is often available as an alternative to cancelling altogether. See our Fees & Medicare page for the full policy.
Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
Yes, with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP you can claim a rebate on up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Your GP will usually refer you for an initial 6 sessions, then review your progress before referring you for the remaining 4. Full details, including current rebate amounts, are on our Fees & Medicare page.
Do you accept NDIS or private health cover?
Yes to both. We welcome NDIS participants with self-managed funding, and many private health funds offer rebates on psychology sessions under extras cover. Rebate amounts vary by fund, so it's worth checking directly with your provider.
Is what I share in sessions confidential?
Yes, with a small number of legal and ethical exceptions common to all registered psychologists, for example, where there's a serious risk to your safety or someone else's, or where disclosure is required by law. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail on how your information is collected, used and stored.
